Woody Harrelson Opens Up About His 'SNL' MonologueNBC

Woody Harrelson has never been one to walk the beaten path. Sometimes, that puts him in places he never expect to be—and occasionally gets him in trouble. But it never phases him. The Internet? "I don’t read it," Harrelson told Esquire in our latest digital cover story. "It’s like when reviews come out for movies. I don’t look... It’s a poison pill." The chatter was hard to ignore earlier this year, however, when Harrelson let loose some controversial thoughts about Covid-19 vaccinations in lengthy Saturday Night Live! monologue.

"The biggest drug cartels in the world get together and buy up all the media and all the politicians and force all the people in the world to stay locked in their homes, and people can only come out if they take the cartel’s drugs and keep taking them over and over," Harrelson said, equating the pandemic to an alleged crazy film script. "I threw the script away. I mean, who is going to believe that crazy idea? Being forced to do drugs? I do that voluntarily all day long."

In Esquire's cover story, Harrelson opened up about the fallout of the monologue, which some criticized as anti-vax in nature. "People told me it was, shall we say, trending," he told Esquire about the monologue. "I don’t look at that shit. I feel like, I said it on SNL. I don’t need to go further with it…other than to say—well, no, I won’t. Never mind. That’s enough.…But it don’t change my life one bit. Not one bit, if the mainstream media wants to have a go at you, right? My life is still wonderful."

Justin Theroux, Harrelson's White House Plumbers co-star, added, "[I've] had some real goes at Woody, and I can tell you, he doesn’t give a shit."
