Gal Gadot broke boundaries as the first woman to star in a standalone Wonder Woman film – as well as making one of the top-grossing, female-fronted and -directed films of 2017. So it's fitting that the Israeli actress would want to take on the role of another pioneering woman: Hedy Lamarr.

Deadline reports that Gadot is close to sealing a deal on a television series inspired by the remarkable life of the Hollywood actress – who was also a brilliant, if underrated, scientist and inventor in her spare time.

The limited series, which will be made by US network Showtime with Sarah Treem, co-creator and executive producer of The Affair, and The Handmaid's Tale producer Warren Littlefield. Gadot will executive produce the series, along with her husband and producing partner Jaron Varsano.

Lamarr had a fascinating, and tragic, life. Born in Austria, she escaped an arms manufacturer husband who was in cahoots with the Nazis for Hollywood, where she became an actress during the industry's Golden Age as part of MGM.

However, her real passion lay in inventing. Lamarr would resist the allure of dazzling parties and the Los Angeles social scene for evenings at home with a drawing board. It was here, along with composer George Antheil, that she invented a radio guidance system for allied torpedoes. Her efforts were ignored by the military, but the technology was later adopted during the Cold War, once the patent had run out. Elements of Lamarr and Antheil's creation have been used to develop Wi-Fi and Bluetooth technology.

Lamarr, who died in 2014, was the subject of a well-received documentary last year, Bombshell: The Hedy Lamar Story.
