Women hailed as heroes for saving lives during fire before first responders arrived: 'Girl power'
Several women in Florida are being hailed as heroes after helping to usher people to safety during a massive fire in the Key Harbour condominiums on Wednesday.
Robin Lusk and Janice Curtis are two of the women responsible for helping. They noticed the flames at around 4am, after finishing their graveyard shift at Flora-Bama restaurant in Perdido Key, Fla. According to WKRG, the women had gone over to Waffle House to grab a bite to eat when they both noticed the initial sparks and sprang into action.
“We saw a blaze go up, some flames, and we both said ‘fire’ at the same time,” Lusk told the local station. “Without telling each other anything, we both got in the cars and headed to the scene.”
The women were joined by a couple of Waffle House employees who made sure to call 9-1-1 on their way to the building. Once they arrived, all six women started banging on doors to ensure that residents were alerted to the fire and to find those who needed assistance, including animals.
WKRG reports that 26 condos and a house were destroyed in the fire. However, the residents were mainly unharmed, thanks in large part to the women’s efforts.
Still, Curtis told the outlet, “I don’t feel like a hero,” although many say she is.
“I’d hope someone would beat on my door if my house was on fire, you know,” she said. “I just did what I’d want someone to do for me and I didn’t really think about it.”
Lusk and Curtis didn’t immediately respond to Yahoo Lifestyle’s request for comment, nor did their employers at Flora-Bama. But the duo told WKRG that they’d credit the success of the rescue to “girl power.”
“Definitely girl power,” Lusk said.
