A woman in Virginia had a literal rude awakening on Saturday when she awoke to find a man she did not know in her bed — and he was kissing her.

The unidentified woman was asleep when the man entered her apartment through an unlocked door, according to NBC Washington. But when she opened her eyes, she found the man, who police say was drunk, was planting a kiss on her cheek. As soon as the horrified woman realized what was happening and confronted him, he dashed out.

Worried that he might still be lurking in her home, the victim then grabbed her cell phone and text messaged 911, describing what was happening and sharing her address. When officers arrived, according to a police report, they apprehended the suspect outside of her apartment but still inside the building. The man, identified as 37-year-old Dominus Dayton, was arrested and charged with unlawful entry as well as assault and battery.

Arlington Police Department spokesperson Ashley Savage told NBC Washington that the victim was emotionally distresses but thankfully, she was physically unharmed. “When officers arrived on the scene we determined that the female victim was asleep in her residence when she was awoken to an unknown male suspect who kissed her on the cheek,” Savage said, adding that the woman was “very distraught from the incident.”

The victim’s neighbors are also shaken up. “I mean, I wouldn’t wish that for anybody,” Gina Grosso told the outlet. “I cannot fathom that happening,” added Deborah Farmer, who added, “When you live in the city you do need to take extra precautions.”

Those precautions, say police, include keeping your doors and windows locked whether you’re home or not. Law enforcement also wants civilians to know they can text message 911 when placing a phone call doesn’t feel safe.

According to the Federal Trade Commission, though, “text-to-911” is not available in every state. If you send a text to 911 where the service is unavailable, you should receive an immediate bounce-back message letting you know to contact emergency services by phone instead.

Dayton is being held without bond for the kissing crime. Yahoo Lifestyle has contacted the Arlington Police Department for comment.
