For the most devout design enthusiasts, incorporating the latest trends into your home—be it a fresh coat of paint or a cool archway—requires plenty of time, creativity, and sometimes money. Wouldn't it be nice if the faddiest features could magically appear in your space? Well, that's exactly what happened in a now-viral TikTok.

When Lara Killebrew Derderian started to renovate her living room, she was told there was a concrete floor underneath her wall-to-wall carpeting. However, when she and her contractors heard the unmistakable squeak of wood in certain areas, they had a feeling there was more to this home's story.

"There were other unexplained oddities in the room as well," she wrote. "The fireplace was too close to the ground. There was an adobe hump against the wall with no apparent purpose. And there was no practical way to orient the furniture in the room." But to Killebrew Derderian's shock and delight, she was literally sitting on an old-fashioned conversation pit—and DesignTok could not be happier.

"Please tell me you're planning on restoring that great piece," one person commented. Another viewer couldn't hold in their excitement and added, "THIS IS A DREAM OMGGG." A third commenter made their stance on conversation pits clear: "The conversation pit need to be put back in houses they are so cool and timeless."

While sunken living rooms were all the rage in the mid-20th century—it was once deemed a smart way for architects and designers to reduce the appearance of furniture clutter—we're starting to see them everywhere again. (Not only have they been popping up in home tours, but fashion brands like Gucci have recently brought the fad to the runway.) And rightfully so: A conversation pit exudes a sense of togetherness, something that is in high-demand after spend years in front of a Zoom screen. And unlike other retro that feel decidedly stuck in the past, a conversation pit can be updated to match a more modern aesthetic.

That's exactly what Killebrew Derderian is learning as she restores and revitalizes her home's conversation pit. She wrote on her latest installment: "At the end of the day, we were able to use the space exactly as it was originally intended: Lively conversation!" Like the rest of DesignTok, we cannot wait to see the final reveal.
