A woman on TikTok went viral after being turned away from her international flight because her passport was expired — despite still having several months before her passport officially expired.
Nneoma (@astoldbynneoma) and her family had planned a family trip to celebrate her mother’s birthday for over six months, however if she didn’t get a brand new passport within 24 hours to catch up with her family, all her money and effort would go to waste.
Her passport expired five months after her flight date, however there are some countries that require your passport to be valid for at least six months beyond the dates of the trip. The United States has signed an agreement with several countries to waive this stipulation, however, there are still nations that enforce it — such as China.
This stipulation was news to many people in the comments who thought you had until the expiration date on the passport use it.
“It’s so crazy that your passport expires before it expires,” said @moneytokduh.
“Y’all acting like this is well known information,” replied @kkmjam.
Nneoma had no choice but to try and get a new passport the next day, but that was an adventure in itself.
Because her local passport agency had no available appointments, she had to fly to Buffalo, N.Y. to meet with someone who said they could get her a same-day passport. She was able to secure the passport, book a flight to meet up with her family and get to the airport in time.
Yet when she got there, another problem arose. The airline lost her luggage, so she had to choose between getting on the flight without knowing where her bag was, or waiting until the airline found it.
She hasn’t posted the next video in the saga yet, but if she follows her recent pattern, the conclusion to this hectic travel story is on the way.
