Woman Hailed Hero for Adopting 12-Year-Old Dog Who Was in Shelter for 8 Years

On Sunday, August 8, TikTok user and dog owner @tashaleelyn posted a video that stole her viewers' hearts. She had just brought home Leroy, a senior shelter dog who waited over 8 years for the perfect family. Time and time again, he was overlooked because of his past.

Tasha's journey to bring her newest dog home couldn't have been sweeter, though no one is loving it more than Leroy himself. The Shepherd mix took to his new mama immediately, and it just got better from there.

This is so sweet! We can only imagine how relieved Leroy is after waiting so long for a forever home. 8 years in a shelter is almost unimaginable!

Unsurprisingly, several commenters like @joparchewsky felt the same way. She wrote, "8 years? I'm bawling." You're not the only one! Watching Leroy break free of the shelter brought tears to our eyes--especially when we saw him rolling in the grass of his new home.

This video only shows Leroy's first day or so at home, but we have no doubt that he'll fit right in with a bit of time and love. Just about every rescue dog does! When a responsible owner keeps things like the 3-3-3 rule in mind, they'll be setting themselves up for success.

The 3-3-3 rule explains how long it can take for a dog to adjust to a new home. After about 3 days, a dog will start to become less afraid and let their guard down, but after about 3 weeks, they'll start to get comfortable with their new routines and roommates. After 3 months, your new dog should start to feel at home. This is when you'll start seeing their true personalities shine!

For Leroy, though, it seems like his true self is already shining through-- thanks to Tara's love.
