Woman does makeup like she did during 2014 Tumblr era: ‘I still do this unironically the nostalgia’

A millennial creator is re-creating her “2014 Tumblr era” and other TikTokers are equally nostalgic about it.

On Aug. 3, Undrea (@c.xndrx) posted a video in which she’s seen doing her makeup the way she used to during the “2014 Tumblr era.”

Of course, for those less familiar, Tumblr, as Paper describes, was the only “website carrying the torch for internet subculture” during the 2010s. As one of the “most defining internet platforms of the new millennium,” the customizable blogging platform, which was founded in 2007 by entrepreneur David Karp, seemed to define the adolescent years of millennials.

The 58-second video, which features famous British rock band Arctic Monkeys’ track “Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High?” off of their 2013 album AM, then shows Undrea going through her once daily grunge-inspired makeup routine — which first consists of using the formerly coveted Anastasia Beverly Hills DipBrow pomade.

Next up, Undrea uses “full matte coverage foundation,” which she says is probably Maybelline. She then buffs out the product with a Beautyblender and “bakes” her face with powder.

Undrea pulls out her Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance eyeshadow palette and “packs on” colors to create a burnt orange and taupe eye look, which she finishes off with the “longest, chunkiest eyeliner.”

Finally, she applies “the darkest liquid matte” lipstick she owns.

In a separate video, posted on Aug. 4, Undrea compares the way she did her makeup in 2014 versus how she does it now. Key differences between the looks appear to be that she currently wears less foundation and concealer, and opts for a “soft bronzer” to achieve an overall more natural look.

On Aug. 6, following the theme of her last two videos, Undrea posted a TikTok chronicling her “aesthetic” photos from her old Tumblr account from as early as 2014.

Millennials have been recognized as the first generation to “define social media trends” that incorporated nostalgic ideas of music, art and fashion.

“The 2014 Tumblr aesthetic took social media by storm in the early 2010s. Fostering a whirlwind of photos with moody color palettes and typically edited with high contrast, this beloved yet dark aesthetic depicted the melancholy of everyday life, such as abandoned alleyways and distant cityscapes,” SB Press writes. “At the time, the main pioneers of these pop culture choices were the millennials, paying homage to ’90s grunge — sporting vintage band tees, distressed flannels and oversized sweatshirts.”

‘I love this it’s like walking down memory lane’

Many creators who are familiar with the makeup style and products Undrea uses are sharing how nostalgic this routine is making them. Others admit that despite it being nearly 10 years later, they still use the same makeup techniques they did in 2014.

“I still do this unironically the nostalgia,” @nosaborican wrote.

“This was how I learned to do makeup and haven’t changed my technique since,” @aliya_martini commented.

“I love this it’s like walking down memory lane,” @gloriamirandaa wrote, to which Undrea replied, “Let’s bring it back.”
