When it comes to engagement rings, size shouldn’t matter. Or so one woman is trying to prove. Fed up with friends and family asking her when she plans on ‘upgrading’ her pretty diamond ring, Rachel Pedersen has taken to social media to call out engagement ring shamers who equate the size of the diamond to the ‘success’ of the couple.
The 27-year-old mum-of-two from Minnesota shared a picture of her approximate ¼ carrot diamond engagement ring to Facebook and Instagram alongside an emotional essay defending its size and the sentiment behind it.
“Yes, I know that my wedding ring is small,” she wrote.
“Friends and family often ask me when I’m going to have it “upgraded”…. After all, it doesn’t represent the level of success we are achieving.”
“I’ve even had one person say “you could wear a bigger ring for important events, so people don’t think you’re not successful.”

The digital marketing manager, who married her husband Poul Pedersen just 13 days after they met, hit back by asking when the size of someone’s ring became an indication of success, going on to explain that for her the ring is so much more.
“My ring symbolizes a whirlwind, storybook, “make you sick” love story…. It reminds me of how my husband and I met and fell at in love in one night at a Perkin’s diner.”
Explaining that when the couple met she was a single mum, while Poul was a window washer, she went on to describe how the couple professed their love to each other just a short week later.
“We couldn’t stop dreaming of our future, so excited to have a baby, buy a house, and fall asleep together every night. We couldn’t wait for the future. So we didn’t.”
Thirteen days after meeting the couple eloped.
“I didn’t even THINK about a ring until my husband surprised me before the ceremony. He drained his savings to gift me with a small token of his love,” she wrote.
“I say small, only because it pales in comparison with how big his love is, even now, after years of marriage. That, my friends, is success to me.”

Rachel’s powerful message obviously hit a nerve with users, as it has since been shared 46,212 times and received over 14K comments, with many being prompted to share their own engagement ring stories.
“Who cares about the size of the ring? You have a husband that loves you with all his heart. For me that’s all that matters. People measuring your success on the size of your ring is pathetic,” wrote one supporter.
“The size of the heart is so much more important than the size of the diamond,” added another.
“Your ring is gorgeous. Don’t worry about the haters. Successful marriage is not defined by ring size,” one commentator wrote.
Others shared similar stories about negative comments on their ring size.
“I’ve had the same said to me and I wouldn’t trade my ring for all the tea in China,” explained one woman.

More than two years later, the happy couple are parents to five-year-old Dakota and one-year-old Delilah. Rachel explained to US Weekly that though she used to dream of wearing a “Tiffany’s 2-carat, round-cut solitaire,” meeting her husband changed her perspective.
“True love with a foundation of respect and trust is far more valuable than a large diamond,” she said.
