Police say Salimah McCann, 30, was arrested on unrelated charges Tuesday, before being arrested for kidnapping and battery.

Investigators said McCann tried to snatch the little girl from her mother as they were walking home from church on Mother’s Day.

Police said McCann was “very jealous” and wanted to separate the mother and daughter. Investigators also said McCann is a military veteran with a long history of criminal and mental health issues.

“She actually lost custody of her child and she admitted that she was depressed as a result of it being Mother’s Day,” Police Chief Jakari Young said.

The victim’s father, Kelly Grainger, told Channel 9 he is relieved the woman was found and his daughter is safe.

“Apparently, from what I understand, the offender tried to karate chop them while they were holding hands,” Grainger said.
