Henry Cavill will soon be back on our screens as Geralt of Rivia when The Witcher returns for its third season, but that will be his final appearance as the character. It has been confirmed by Netflix that the show has been renewed for a fourth season, but that the main character will be recast, with Hunger Games star Liam Hemsworth playing Geralt moving forward.

“My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for Season 4,” said Cavill. “In my stead, the fantastic Mr Liam Hemsworth will be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf. As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men. Liam, good sir, this character has such a wonderful depth to him, enjoy diving in and seeing what you can find.”

This comes shortly after the announcement that Cavill will be reprising the role of Clark Kent / Superman in the DC movie universe, although it is unclear whether this decision had any impact on his departure from the Netflix series.

Hemsworth has also his excitement at the prospect of taking up the monster-hunting mantle, saying: “As a Witcher fan I’m over the moon about the opportunity to play Geralt of Rivia. Henry Cavill has been an incredible Geralt, and I’m honoured that he’s handing me the reins and allowing me to take up the White Wolf’s blades for the next chapter of his adventure. Henry, I’ve been a fan of yours for years and was inspired by what you brought to this beloved character. I may have some big boots to fill, but I’m truly excited to be stepping into The Witcher world.”

Based on the popular series of books by Andrzej Sapkowski, The Witcher was a video game before finally being adapted for television, and was something of a passion project for Cavill. Unfortunately, some fans of the show don't seem to be taking the news of the recasting well, with some speculating that his absence will result in a dip in quality.

There's still some time before we will have to say goodbye to Cavill as Geralt. Season 3 will begin streaming in the summer next year. In the meantime, prequel series The Witcher: Blood Origin, starring Michelle Yeoh, drops on Netflix on December 25,
