Wish may be Disney’s biggest release of the year, but it didn’t do so well in China. In fact, the animated musical opened at fifth place with only $3.5 million in ticket revenue.

The number one spot at the Chinese box office went to crime thriller Across the Furious Sea, which earned $24.7 million over its opening weekend.

Directed and co-written by Cao Baoping, it’s a murder-mystery following a father, played by Huang Bo, who goes on a mission of revenge after his daughter is murdered while studying abroad in Japan.

Based on the Chinese crime novel of the same name, Across the Furious Sea was completed in 2020, but has only just found its way to theatres, with many citing lengthy lockdown measures put in place during the pandemic as the source of the delay.

Wish wasn’t the only Hollywood film to struggle in China, however. The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes earned under $1 million, while The Marvels dropped off the top ten list.
