Wisconsin Ski Area Asking Followers To Name New Snowcat

Wilmot Mountain, Wisconsin, is getting a new snowcat.

And like any good snowcat, this one needs a name -- a task that Wilmot asked the internet for help with today, September 6th.

To participate in the naming, head over to Wilmot's Instagram page and check their stories.

When I saw this post from Wilmot, I did a bit of a double-take. Historically, asking the internet for help naming anything hasn't produced positive or, at the very least, serious results.

For instance, in 2016, a 200 million Euro British research vessel needed a new name. The team tasked with naming the vessel hosted an online poll, and the results, while hilarious, were entirely unserious. The winning name by a wide margin? "Boaty McBoatface." The poll organizers ultimately decided to name the vessel Sir David Attenborough and compromised by calling one of Sir David Attenborough's submersibles Boaty McBoatface.

Hence, the term "McBoatfaced" was coined, which describes the error of allowing the internet to poll on something, be it a new name or an important decision.

And that wasn't even the worst instance of an internet naming poll being dominated by pranksters. While I won't share the results of the said poll (we like to keep it classy here at Powder), Mountain Dew faced a much more sordid fate when they asked for help naming a new green-apple-flavored drink in 2012 -- I'll let your imagination fill in the blanks.

Thus, I was pretty concerned to head into the comments section of this post from Wilmot. Alas, the results so far are tame compared to what Mountain Dew faced and, in some cases, pretty funny.

Here are a few of my favorites:

Camden (This one was provided by someone named Camden)

The Catillac

Snowy McSnowface (Someone had to do it)

Scorpion

Now, all we can do is wait and see what Wilmot decides on. Admittedly, my vote is on Snowy McSnowface, as the whole Boaty McBoatface debacle was a little bit of a letdown in my opinion.
