Winter X Games 2024 Releases Competition Schedule

The Winter X Games are awesome. There's no other way to put it. They're extreme (hence the name) they draw interesting athletes to participate, and they're just... fun to watch.

This year's competition schedule has just been announced, and it's a good one. For the first time ever, Ski and Snowboard Knuckle Huck competitions will feature women’s disciplines!

Plus, the Winter X Games started here in California (specifically at Snow Summit ski resort in Big Bear Lake, California) in 1997.

The X Games are relatively new, compared to the Olympics, for example.

In 1993, ESPN management "decided to devote significant resources to the creation of an international gathering of action sport athletes."

By 1995, the events included 27 different events in nine sport categories: Bungy Jumping, Eco-Challenge, In-line Skating, Skateboarding, Skysurfing, Sport Climbing, Street Luge, Biking and Water Sports.

1996 brought the decision to create the Winter X Games, held at Snow Summit Mountain Resort in Big Bear Lake, California.

The competition schedule featured snowboarding, ice climbing, snow mountain bike racing, super-modified shovel racing and a crossover multi-sport event.

In 1997, the Winter X Games ran, and were a huge hit.

Check out footage from the Shovel Racing contest at the 1997 X Games below.

This year, the X Games are back again, with Women's Snowboard Slopestyle, Men's Snowboard Knuckle Huck, Men's Ski Big Air, Men's Snowboard Superpipe, Men's Ski Slopestyle, Women's Snowboard Knuckle Huck, Women's Ski Knuckle Huck, Men's and Women's Street Snowboarding, Women's Ski Superpipe, Women's Ski Big Air, and Men's Snowboard Big Air.

On the docket for Sunday is Men's Snowboard Slopestyle, Women's Ski Slopestyle, Men's Ski Superpipe, and Women's Snowboard Big Air.

Noteworthy competitors include "superstar Eileen Gu, the hottest young gun in women’s snowboarding Zoi Sadowski-Synnott looking to win double gold again, Knuckle Huck wizards Marcus Kleveland and Zeb Powell facing off and Alex Hall looks to show off why he is one of the most well-rounded skiers by attempting to medal in four disciplines. Chloe Kim has also been back on her snowboard and hinting at an X Games return…"

We love Alex Hall over here at POWDER!

As a skier, I'm stoked to watch the ski events, especially the big air and superpipe contests. Pipe tricks are a whole other level compared to regular airs for people like me, who can't even imagine throwing a 720 with a straight landing, let alone the side of a massive wall!

Cheers to you guys and gals throwing it down. We'll be watching and taking notes, but you're doing radical stuff most of us wouldn't even dream of trying... and that's why it's so fun to watch!
