Winter Is Settling In At Lone Resort Open In Utah's Cottonwood Canyons

Utah's Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons are home to four famous ski resorts: Solitude Mountain Resort, Brighton Resort, Alta Ski Area, and Snowbird. Of these four, only Solitude has opened this season.

The mismatched opening roster stems in part from a dry spell that settled over the Wasatch this November, but it seems the tides are finally turning.

Solitude, alongside its Cottonwood Canyons compatriots, received a snowy reset this week.

Here's a look.

Solitude's website reports that the resort has two chairlifts and three trails open. In the comments section of this post, Solitude hinted that more snow is needed to make any dramatic early-season terrain expansions.

Regardless, hats off to Solitude's hardworking snowmaking crew. It's been a tough start to the season in the Cottonwood Canyons, so they deserve all the praise.

Elsewhere in the Canyons, Snowbird showed off its snowy harvest, reporting a 13+ inch storm total.

The kicker? Forecasters anticipate more snow arriving later this week in Utah. Currently, NOAA's forecast for Solitude predicts four to 10 inches of snow on Thursday.

Similar snowfall totals are expected in Little Cottonwood Canyon at Alta and Snowbird.

As you might expect, I'm fighting a massive urge to jinx it by proclaiming, "Winter's here in the Cottonwoods!" -- don't fret, though; I'm putting a cork in it.
