"Winter Berry" Hair Is the Best Way for Brunettes to Play With Purple Dye This Season

This look was made for dark hair.

A new year almost always inspires people to make changes in one way or another. For some, this means KonMari-ing the whole house, and for others, it means vowing to cook at home and exercise more. For hair-color chameleons, however, it means makeover time. If you fall into the last category, you're in luck, because there are already several swoon-worthy hair-color trends surfacing on social media. We've waxed poetic about mustard yellow, a badass, spicy shade that's perfect for someone hoping to cut down on salon visits. Today, though, we're here to tell you about our latest hair-color obsession: winter berry.

Created by color mastermind Sydney Doctor of Style-Lush Salon, winter berry is a mesmerizing blend of deep purple and dark blue tones that's modern, multidimensional, and ideal for anyone who wants to dip their toes in the world of rainbow hair. "Winter berry is the sister trend to the cranberry colors we saw in late fall," says TruHair founder Chelsea Scott. "It’s a great way for dark brunettes and those with jet-black hair to get in on the purple trend without having to use bleach," she adds. Speaking of, brunettes: We suggest checking out this handy guide to getting rainbow colors without bleach, because there are myriad temporary options on the market to try before making a permanent move.

Scott says winter berry is especially flattering on those with cooler skin tones, though that doesn't mean you can't slay the trend if you're on the neutral or warm side of the spectrum. Simply work with your colorist to find a specific color blend that suits your complexion. New York City-based colorist Nikki Ferrera notes that winter berry is also a gorgeous option for those with olive undertones. Additionally, she says she would only recommend this color for people who have naturally dark brown hair, because the hair won't be able to carry the tone if it's too light.

If you're someone who wants to try a bold hue without it being too out there, winter berry is definitely a hair color worth considering. "[Because] you have the neutral blue-black base, it's not going to turn out bright purple or blue," explains colorist Stephanie Brown, who adds that this shade is optimal for anyone who doesn't mind a little attention. (So, all of us then?)

If you're a brunette who's been itching to spice up your strands this season, winter berry could be the color for you. For more inspiration, check out the hair-color trends everyone and their mother will be trying in 2019.
