Winona Ryder stood on the SAG Award stage this January while her Stranger Things co-star, David Harbour, delivered a powerful acceptance speech on behalf of the whole cast. Positioned right next to him, Ryder shook her head; her brow furrowed; she raised her fist in solidarity and brought it back down, a little confused. It was altogether a perplexing display that could have been easily and satisfactorily explained away by saying, “Winona was briefly possessed by demons. She’s fine now.” The actual reason according to Harbour was that the actress couldn’t hear him very well.

In a new report, anonymous sources told Page Six that Ryder refers to the incident as “Facegate” among friends, and that she’s “been ‘face-palming’ ever since.”

Where Ryder’s reported description fits in the “-gate” sphere of scandale is in the eye of the beholder. A working ranking, however, would place it above the too-niche Babygate, one that’s propelled forth by One Direction conspiracy theorists, as well as the altogether frightening Pizzagate. Its spiritual equivalent is probably Ariana Grande’s Doughnutgate in terms of potential demon interference (more on that here) and audience. Stranger things, indeed.
