Winner of Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show Is Capturing Hearts Everywhere

It didn't take long for word to spread about the winner of this year's Westminster Kennel Club dog show. After all, he did make history with the first win for his breed! Even his handler and co-owner was pleasantly surprised at this pup's epic victory, and when you see him--you'll understand why he won!

Meet "CH Soletrader Buddy Holly," or Buddy Holly for short. He's a 6-year-old petit basset griffon Vendéen (try saying that five times fast) and now, he's Best in Show, too. As CBS News reports, this is a major milestone for both this pup and his whole breed.

What a cutie pie! This petit basset griffon Vendéen--or PBGV, as the breed is known--beat out over 2500 other pooches to become the top dog. The first step was earning first place in the hound group, but then he beat the other finalists, too.

His competitors in the finals included Rummie the Pekingese, Winston the French Bulldog, and Ribbon the Australian Shepherd, among others. When we say that the competition was fierce, that's no exaggeration! Winston came incredibly close to a win last year, and many expected him to take home the gold in 2023.

Needless to say, Buddy Holly's win is a total surprise! Even his co-owner and handler, Janice Hayes, admitted to her shock.

"I never thought a PBGV would do this," she told CBS News. "Buddy Holly is the epitome of a show dog [...] They're just very independent but very charming and just silly. Their goal is to make you laugh every day." As much as we loved seeing Buddy Holly in the show ring, we hope to get peek of this fluffy dog living his best life at home, too.

Congratulations, Buddy Holly!
