This New Wine Gift Registry Is Perfect for a Wedding—or Any Big Occasion

After a year of quarantine cooking, most engaged couples have probably figured out their cookware needs. Maybe your wedding registry, whether it’s on Zola or Amazon or somewhere else, should include a few big-ticket items (your coffee maker, your stand mixer, maybe an heirloom-to-be) but beyond that, you might be… set? That’s why the honeymoon registry—buy the happy couple snacks by the pool!—became a thing: It’s the gift of an experience that is sure to be enjoyed, but won’t stick around after, crammed onto a shelf alongside your mixing bowls.

But maybe the cold-hard-cash aspect of a honeymoon registry doesn’t feel quite right for you, and you want a way to suggest gifts that won’t fill your kitchen forever, but will fit alongside the home-and-entertaining theme of most wedding presents. If you like to drink wine, the answer is a wine registry.

A wine registry is the perfect way to collect a wishlist of exactly the experiences you want to have—experiences like opening a nice bottle of Beaujolais at the first Thanksgiving you host together as a married couple, or inviting friends over for a summer barbecue with lots of really good rosé, or sipping a glass of Champagne on your one month anniversary. It’s a great way to fill the wine fridge that you received as a wedding gift, and to make sure that you’re stocked up for all of the occasions that come when you have a lot to celebrate—and pretty new dishware to show off.

You could probably set up a DIY wishlist at your favorite neighborhood wine shop, but until recently, there weren’t many great online options for guests buying gifts from afar. The wine registries that did exist largely pushed generic, mass-market bottles—not the special sparkler from the vineyard you visited a few years back, or iconic, collectible wines from the world’s great small producers. But recently, Parcelle Wine, a shop co-founded by sommelier Grant Reynolds of New York’s Charlie Bird, Pasquale Jones, and Legacy Records, launched a gift registry of their own—and they’ve got some good stuff.

Your wine registry should, of course, be customized to your taste. But below, you'll find a few categories I’d include if I were making one now. And it’s worth checking out even if you’re not engaged: You’re not required to include a co-registrant, so Parcelle’s registry could also be the perfect place to build a wishlist for holiday gifts or a big upcoming birthday.

But first, glassware and a wine fridge

If you’re going to keep more than a few bottles of wine around, you’ll need the gear: glasses that are a joy to drink from, and a safe way to store your bottles. No, the spot on top of your kitchen refrigerator does not count.

Bubbles, bubbles, bubbles

Is there anything more celebratory than popping a bottle of sparkling wine? Champagne and high quality bubbles from elsewhere are essential for festivities as big as an anniversary and as also-big as finally being able to have friends over again. Champagne is also a great option for cellaring for a few years: it just gets more delicious with time.

And some to save

If you’re serious about starting a wine collection, and have a good temperature- and humidity controlled storage situation, fill your wine registry with bottles to drink on your fifth or tenth anniversary, or beyond. Look for options with ample acidity and/or tannin that’ll help preserve the wine for the long haul.
