After nearly 30 years, the oldest tennis tournament in the world is valuing the men's and women's championships equally. Ticket prices for the 2022 Wimbledon men’s and women’s singles finals will be the same for the first time since 1991. In recent years, tickets for the women's final have been sold at a cheaper rate than tickets for the men's final: Last year, spectators paid £200 to watch Ash Barty win, compared to £240 to watch Novak Djokovic take home the title. This year, according to The Times, both championship matches will cost £240. The equal ticket cost will extend to the semi-finals as well.

15 years ago, Wimbledon became the last Grand Slam tournament to offer equal prize money for men and women. Venus Williams, who has won five Wimbledon titles, was a huge activist for equal pay at the British tournament. When she won her fourth Wimbledon championship in 2007, she became the first woman to win exactly the same as the men's champion: $1.4 million.

The Times reported the move to charge equally for both finals is motivated by a desire to ensure that both events are given equal importance, and the rise of women's British tennis star Emma Raducanu. At Wimbledon 2021, she reached the fourth round before withdrawing with breathing difficulties.

Raducanu, 19, won the U.S. Open last year, and quickly became a British sensation. Her rise to stardom has renewed British interest in tennis—likely making the 2022 Wimbledon tickets a hotter commodity.

The Queen even sent Raducanu a message in which she described the victory as "a remarkable achievement at such a young age, and is testament to your hard work and dedication," and Kate Middleton joined the teenage champion on the court at a homecoming celebration.

The Duchess of Cambridge is the patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, the organization that hosts Wimbledon. Last year, she attended both the men's and women's championship matches, participating in both trophy ceremonies, and she can often be found in the royal box over the course of the tournament.

Expect Kate to be in attendance for the 2022 Wimbledon championships—with fans who have paid the same amount for both matches.

The 2022 Wimbledon Championships begin on Monday, June 27, and end on Sunday, July 10.
