The two met on the set of Smith’s popular TV Show The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air but later reconnected years after. They recounted the interaction in an episode of Pinkett Smith’s Facebook show Red Table Talk in 2018. “I said, ‘Hey Jada, what’s up? It’s Will.’ She said, ‘Hey, how are you doing? I said, ‘OK, are you seeing anybody?’” Smith recalled of their phone conversation after he signed his divorce papers. “And she said, ‘Um … no.’ I said, ‘Cool, you’re seeing me now.’” “And my dumba– was like, ‘OK,’” Pinkett Smith responded and laughed.

They married in 1997, though Pinkett Smith felt “pressured” to do the wedding by her mother. “I was under so much pressure being a young actress and pregnant, and I didn’t know what to do,” she said.“My first trimester was horrible. I was so upset that I had to have a wedding. I was so pissed. I went crying down the freaking aisle getting married.”

How did Willow and Jaden Smith React to Jada and Will’s separation?

Two sources told Daily Mail about how Will and Jada’s kids feel about the whole situation. “Although Jaden and Willow love their mom to no end and take on many of her behaviors and traits, they are very relieved the news is finally out there so everyone can just get on with it, no one is getting any younger,” one source said. “They all want everyone to be true to themselves and not hold any more grudges or secrets.”

The source continued, “Jaden and Willow hope that everyone can now heal and remove any drama that still might be in their worlds now that all the revelations have come out. They have seen the attacks that their mom has gotten from all of this, and they really hope people can trust their mom in the future, they weren’t expecting negativity to shine on their mom but now that it is happening, they want to get through it all as a family.’

Another source told the publication that Will and Jada “put their children in a very strange and uncomfortable situation.” The insider said, “They were constantly asked about their parents and for seven years they had to basically lie to everyone and pretend that everything was perfectly fine when they knew it was not. This made them extremely agitated at times and they would constantly get in fights with each other and with them.”

As for which child is on either side, the source dished, “Willow holds so much animosity towards Will in particular. She will always take Jada’s side in things.” However, in this situation, “she does not know why her mom had to go and tell the world all their dirty laundry. She feels like she is laughed at by all her peers.”

In an interview with People, Jada revealed what she thought about her children amid the separation. “My children, they’re little gurus. They’ve taught me a deep sense of self-acceptance,” she said. “They love every part of me. The level of love, unconditional love that they have for me and their dad. And it’s one thing to want to be the person that gives that unconditional love. And then there’s, to be the recipient of that.”

Why did Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith separate? The two separated in 2016 and they simply grew out of the relationship yet. As to why they haven’t filed for divorce, Pinkett Smith told Hoda Kotb in a preview of an hour long primetime interview that the two are “just not being ready yet … Still trying to figure out between the two of us how to be in partnership … In regards to, how do we present that to people? We hadn’t figured that out.”

Kotb asked about what exactly made the marriage fracture, “Why it fractured…that — that’s a lot of things,” Pinkett Smith revealed. “By the time we got to 2016, we were just exhausted with trying. I think we were both kind of just still stuck in our fantasy of what we thought the other person should be.”

She also talked about the promise she made to Smith. “I made a promise that there will never be a reason for us to get a divorce. We will work through … whatever,” Pinkett Smith says. “I just haven’t been able to break that promise.”

She echoed the same sentiment in an exclusive interview with People. “We’re still figuring it out. We’ve been doing some really heavy-duty work together. We just got deep love for each other and we are going to figure out what that looks like for us.”

In an email to The New York Times, Will Smith shared that Jada Pinkett Smith’s memoir served as a wake up call for him.

“When you’ve been with someone for more than half of your life,” he wrote, “a sort of emotional blindness sets in, and you can all too easily lose your sensitivity to their hidden nuances and subtle beauties.”

Will also shared his thoughts on Jada’s memoir in a letter penned for Jay Shetty’s podcast, “On Purpose,” where Jada recently appeared to discuss her forthcoming book. A clip from her episode, which drops in full on Oct. 16, was shared by the Associated Press on YouTube.

During Jada Pinkett Smith’s appearance, Jay Shetty offered to read her estranged husband’s letter out loud for her.

“I applaud and honor you. If I had read this book 30 years ago, I definitely would’ve hugged you more,” read the letter.

“I’ll start now. Welcome to the Authors Club,” Shetty said, continuing to read the letter. “I love you endlessly. Now go get some Merlot and take a rest.”

Jada initially laughed at Will’s comments, joking, “He know I can’t have no Merlot.” But the actress went on to express her appreciation for Will’s note. “That’s beautiful,” she said. “That’s why I can’t divorce that joker.”
