Wilkinson paves driveways

May 1—ASHTABULA — Paving driveways is one way to improve the look of a home and property.

Wilkinson Paving and Excavating is a company that works to enhance driveway paving throughout the area, said R.J. Wilkinson, an estimator for the Ashtabula-based company.

Company representatives will appear at this weekend's Ashtabula County Home and Family Show at Ashtabula Towne Square. Show hours are Saturday from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

"We do driveways and parking lots," Wilkinson said of the company's main business model.

He said occasionally they will fix holes connected to road-paving projects, but don't do road work themselves.

Wilkinson Paving and Excavating is scheduled to be at the Ashtabula County Home and Family Show on Saturday and Sunday. The event is sponsored by the Ashtabula County Chambers of Commerce.

Wilkinson said the company does two to three driveways a week from spring to fall. He said it is critical to do the job right so cracks don't appear in the driveway and water drains properly.

Wilkinson said you can tell if the project was done wrong if there are cracks showing up in the driveway or you are looking up at your garage from the front of the driveway.

"We do a driveway in one day," Wilkinson said. He said the crew generally comes out and grinds the driveway area and then installs the asphalt.

Digging, or grinding, down two and one half inches is important.

The driveway paving season gets rolling later this month.

"The asphalt plant isn't open yet," he said.

Wilkinson said the company has been doing some work at the Goodwill facility in Ashtabula and will be gearing up for a busy spring and summer season.
