Wikipedia editor gives a behind-the-scenes look at their monthly hangout: ‘What a positive thing about society’

Wikipedia is a common source of information for many people on the internet, but who is writing all the content?

One Wikipedia editor, Anna Rauwerda (@depthsofwikipedia), recently posted a video on TikTok showing all the volunteers that help run and edit the site getting together at their monthly hangout.

“Once a month at the Brooklyn Public Library, Wikipedia editors come together and hangout,” she said. “We talk about what we’ve been editing, what’s frustrating us, we ask questions and sometimes we just chit chat about random topics.”

Viewers couldn’t get over how wholesome and nice it is that Wikipedia editors have a space to get together on a monthly basis.

“Not an editor. But glad meetups like this exist and happen. What a positive thing about society,” replied @f1_on_film.

“Dang i know i have to go outside because seeing you guys just made me start crying,” replied @ekilijah.

After seeing the interactions between Wikipedia editors, several people wanted to join the editor fraternity — which doesn’t have much of a screening process.

The editors are volunteers who like to write and edit content about their favorite subjects. The website doesn’t have a formal editing process, but editors attempt to cite their sources as much as possible to limit any mistakes.

“How does one become a Wikipedia editor? I’ve fighting urges to bulk up/edit pages on Wikipedia for yearssss,” asked @supersophistocated420 in the comments.

According to Rauwerda, the best way to start being a Wikipedia editor is to simply start doing it.

“You kinda just… go for it,” @depthsofwikipedia responded. “Start small.”

With a behind-the-scenes look at the lives of Wikipedia editors and a little information on how to get started, it seems like the website is set to get more volunteers shortly.
