Wichita Asian Association talks about AAPI Heritage Month

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – Amelia Phommachanh with the Wichita Asian Association stopped by KSN on Wednesday to talk about Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.

“AAPI Heritage Month celebrates the diverse cultures and contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders to American society. It highlights their achievements in various fields and recognizes their vital role in shaping the nation’s identity,” said Phommachanh in a statement to KSN. “Additionally, the month raises awareness about the challenges faced by AAPI communities, including discrimination and systemic barriers. By promoting dialogue and understanding, AAPI Heritage Month fosters solidarity and unity among people of all backgrounds. It encourages individuals to embrace cultural diversity and work towards a more inclusive society. Through educational initiatives and cultural events, AAPI Heritage Month inspires positive change and promotes equity for all.”

According to Phommachanh, this year marks the first-ever celebration kickoff event for AAPI Heritage Month in order to promote community awareness of Asian culture.

There are three celebrations lined up for the month:

During these events, guests will be able to experience diverse Asian performances showcasing various ethnic groups from Asia. From taekwondo by Kim’s Academy to Cambodian Robam Munivongsa dancers and Japanese Okinawa Eisa drummers.

Admission to these events is free.
