Why you're more likely to have vivid dreams during pregnancy

Gearing up to welcome a bundle of joy into the world? Well, first up – congratulations! And as you'll probably have realised by now, pregnancy can bring with it a whole host of different side effects, from sore nipples to a dark line appearing down the centre of your stomach. The symptoms of pregnancy can also have an impact on your sleep too, with many reporting experiencing extra vivid dreams whilst they're growing a baby as well. But why might that be? And do intense dreams during pregnancy actually really mean anything?

Many have reported dreaming of things like running water in HD, or baby animals (cute), but fear not – according to Claudia Pastides (MBBS), Director of Medical Accuracy at Flo Health, who has also created the Due Date Calculator, whilst it might be an 'unexpected' symptom of pregnancy, heightened dreams are nothing to stress about. It's all pretty normal.

"Although it's an unexpected symptom for many, it's often normal to have particularly vivid and more frequent dreams when pregnant," Pastides explains. "Dreaming occurs during the REM stage of the sleep cycle, and typically we experience four or five episodes of dreaming a night.

"However, pregnant women may frequently wake up throughout the night and are more likely to remember their dreams, as their REM stage is repeatedly interrupted."
