Why You’re Having So Many Weird Dreams During Quarantine, According to Sleep Experts As COVID-19 dominates the news, it’s no surprise that the pandemic has also started affecting people’s sleep. Many people are reporting vivid or stressful dreams during quarantine. Why are people having these dreams during the pandemic? Experts agree that having vivid dreams or the occasional nightmare, is normal during times of widespread uncertainty. Additionally, some people are sleeping more as they self isolate, which means more opportunity to experience dreams produced during REM sleep. Even if you’re not getting more sleep, your quarantine dreams could still get pretty wild because of REM rebound. When you’re not getting proper sleep, your brain can slip more deeply into REM when you manage to get a decent snooze. If you use melatonin as a sleep aid, taking too much or taking it at the wrong time can also cause sleep disturbances.
