Taylor Sheridan has built an ever-expanding empire of interconnected crime dramas on Paramount+ off the back of the success of his first major hit, the still-ongoing Yellowstone. But fans of the Western saga, which follows the fortunes of the complicated Dutton dynasty, may be surprised to learn that the show is not up for any awards at the 2024 Golden Globes.

Yellowstone has proven a hugely popular show with viewers, if not always with critics, but that's not the reason it has been neglected at this year's Globes. Far from being a snub, it's actually a matter of eligibility: Yellowstone is excluded on a technicality in the institution's rules of consideration.

In order for a TV show to be eligible for a Golden Globe nomination, it must have aired at least 150 minutes of programming in the qualifying year, with each episode lasting a minimum of 20 minutes. While the length of episodes is not an issue, Yellowstone fell short of the minimum total duration of airtime: only one new episode of its fifth season was broadcast in the allotted time period.

"A Knife and No Coin," the eighth episode of Season 5, aired on January 1, 2023. The second half of Season 5 has yet to be released, due to delays caused by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.

However, that isn't to say Sheridan's wider television universe isn't being represented this awards season. The Yellowstone prequel 1923 is up for two Golden Globes: Best Drama, and Best Actress for Helen Mirren.
