Why You Won't Spot Meghan Markle Wearing a Tiara

Meghan Markle is super busy making her way around England with royal fiancé Prince Harry and looking supremely stylish while doing so. While on tour, you’ll likely see her rocking a few one-of-a-kind fashion items, and carrying ultra-rare purses, but there’s one thing you won’t see her wearing: a tiara. That’s because she’s not allowed to — at least until May.

Why is Meghan being denied this very princess-like accessory? It’s simple: She’s not a real royal yet. According to experts, royal protocol says no one can wear the royal jewels or tiaras in public outings until they are married into the Windsor family.

“Flashy diamonds and tiaras are not worn during the day, and only married ladies wear tiaras,” etiquette expert Grant Harold told The BBC. “For married ladies it was a sign of status and would show you were taken and not looking for a husband. For the gentleman it was a clear sign not to make advances toward the lady in question.”

So will she wear one on her wedding day on May 19 like Middleton did for her big day? That’s highly probable, though you likely won’t see her in one again for quite some time as the headpieces are typically reserved for special events.

There is one thing Meghan will most certainly bring with her on her walk down the aisle that both Kate and Princess Diana had on their wedding days: a small sprig of myrtle that was grown from a bush on the Isle of Wight. The delicate flower has become a part of the royal wedding tradition, so it would be a little odd if Meghan were the only royal lady to miss out.

It really does prove she’s been ready to carry the crown her entire life.
