From Town & Country

It's been 50 years since Love Story shook the country and catapulted its young stars Ali MacGraw and Ryan O'Neal into overnight fame. The movie's legacy of love, loss, and the stubbornness of youth still carries on, as does the movie’s lesser known star: the fashion.

The iconic story chronicles the relationship of the young couple, and in the process, it creates the definitive textbook on Ivy League dressing. In nearly every scene, there's a jaw-dropping style moment including but not limited to: blazers, trench coats, and a pair of unforgettable red tights. Even though it’s been 50 years since the world was taught that “Love means never having to say you’re sorry,” there are still many lessons in style that can be learned. We’ve compiled Love Story’s best fashion moments (with some options to recreate), so be sure to take notes, Preppie.

The Walks Around Campus

Some of the most beautiful moments in Love Story happen as Jenny and Oliver are walking around the Harvard campus. The witty rapport, the romantic snow storm, and the heart to hearts are all set against the lovely Barrett Hall backdrop. But let's not forget the campus fashion moments, they have us acting out our Ivy League fantasies wherever we are.

Meeting the parents is a universally nerve wracking experience, especially when you pull up to a compound like the Barrett's. But with that red dress and a great sense of humor, even the naysayers can be charmed.

Over the Threshold

Every bride should insist upon being carried over the threshold, but Jenny took it a few steps (or maybe a few floors) further. When her and Oliver move into their apartment, the viewer swells with happiness, the hope of true love, and the joy that comes with seeing an absolutely stunning outfit.

The Big Fight

In one of the most heart wrenching scenes in the movie, Jenny and Oliver get into a blowout fight over Oliver's father that results in Jenny storming out of their townhouse apartment. Oliver famously runs around the campus and town screaming her name, just to find her sitting on the front porch because she forgot her key. Because after all, when you're this stylish, what's there to really fight about?

This scene is the most succinct argument that being a camp counselor is actually really chic. Time to rewrite all your camp memories, turns out it was a fashion show after all.
