Why Vaseline Is My Favorite Skincare Product
Growing up, Vaseline was a staple in our household. I vividly remember my mom greasing me up with the petroleum jelly as soon as I got out of the shower, because as she said, that's when it works best. My grandmother would always say, "You have that girl shining like new money." I didn't mind it, though, because it left my skin looking and feeling amazing.
Fast forward to now and I still use the Vaseline Petroleum Jelly Original as one of the main steps in my daily routine. Not only does it serve as a moisturizer, it's also great at protecting my skin — whether I apply it over healing scars or use it to guard against dry winter weather. The "original jelly wonder," which I also sometimes get in its cocoa butter version, never fails to nourish.
There's no denying that Vaseline can get pretty greasy. The key is to apply it right when you get out of the shower (that way your skin is still damp and able to retain moisture) and let it work through your skin, before you put your clothes on. This is how I avoid getting stains on my clothes and ruining them. While other lotions tend to just sit on top of my skin, I've found this one to be far better at moisturizing. I literally use it on my entire body, from my feet, to my hands, and especially on my lips. Before I apply any of my favorite glosses or lip colors, I put a thin layer on to make sure my lips are moisturized. Sometimes, I'll just wear it by itself for a hint of shine.
In the winter, my skin tends to get extremely dry, especially on the heels of my feet. I try to soothe them with pedicures, but nothing compares to getting straight out of the shower and then applying a medium coat of Vaseline to my feet (and immediately putting on socks to seal in the moisture). After doing that for a few days, the soles of my feet feel instantly better — without fail.
After talking to my mom about my favorite beauty products recently, I realized that Vaseline has consistently been in my routine throughout my life. My mother also reminded me that she likes to use it for dry patches, scars, and even dark marks. The giant, $6 tub will always have a special place in my routine because I was raised on it. And I'd buy it over any high-end skincare, any day.
