The filmmaker is looking out for his 7-year-old son, Aman.

Tyler Perry is revealing why he prefers to keep his personal relationships very private, especially when it comes to his 7-year-old son, Aman.

In a new issue of AARP The Magazine, the actor and filmmaker discussed the importance of keeping his son out of the limelight in order to give him a "normal" life.

"These people are not famous," Perry explained in the August/September cover story for the publication. "My son's not famous. I want him to have as normal a life as he can," he added.

"I want him to know what it's like to have his own name and his own life and not have the pressure of trying to live up to whatever or whoever your father was," the 52-year-old dad continued.

Perry shares Aman with ex Gelila Bekele, whom he split with in December 2020.

In the interview, Perry described Bekele as "an incredible mother," although he didn't add anything else about their former relationship.

Perry also shared that he is holding off on talking about race with his son until he's a bit older, telling the outlet, "I want to hold out as long as I can."

"I don't want to tell him that there are people who will judge him because of the color of his skin, because right now he's in a school with every race, and all these kids are in their purest form," he continued. "When he describes his friends, he never defines them by race."

"The moment he loses that innocence is going to be a very, very sad day for me," he added.
