The Met Gala is traditionally held on the first Monday in May. However, like most large gatherings, it was postponed multiple times due to the pandemic. There was no Met Gala in 2020, nor was there one in May 2021. However, the gala hosts are making up for lost time, holding two Met Galas in the next few months.

The first Met Gala will be a somewhat scaled down affair on September 13, 2021. This is the postponed event from May 2021, and the theme is American fashion. The September gala will mark the opening of the "In America: A Lexicon of Fashion" exhibit at the museum's Costume Institute.

How will the event be downscaled? Well, the guest list is about a third smaller than usual, according to the New York Times. The September gala is also slated to be quite youth-focused, with hosts Amanda Gorman, Timothée Chalamet, Naomi Osaka, and Billie Eilish. And the exhibit itself is 70 percent young designers. There will also be an assortment of Covid protocols, including social distancing, mandatory vaccinations and Covid testing, and masks required except when eating.

A few short months after the September Met Gala, the museum will get back on schedule with their annual May Met Gala, keeping the 2022 Met Gala on the same, traditional date. The next Met Gala will be on May 2, 2022 to open part two of the American fashion exhibit, entitled "An Anthology of Fashion." In this second part, the museum is working with "American film directors to create cinematic scenes within each room that depict a different history of American fashion."

While not many details have been released about the 2022 gala, it is implied that the event will return to its regular size and stature, should the pandemic allow.
