Pizza is one of my favorite things. I always seem to be in the mood for it and it never lets me down. Even a "bad" slice is still pretty good, so there’s probably not a day where I will ever turn down pizza. In fact, just reading the word "pizza" a bunch of times in a row is probably making you crave some, right?;
Well, take heed when using Google today, as the search engine's home page will definitely make you run out for a pie. The site is paying homage to the humble pie through their daily Doodle, also known as, the fun little design around the Google logo that changes to honor something or someone. This Monday, it's a fun (albeit quite hard!) pizza-slicing game in order to celebrate different kinds of pizza from all over the world.
The game asks you to cut a whole pizza into a certain number of slices, making sure to get specific toppings on each. As you level up, you discover more about pizzas from different countries. There’s the classic Margherita, white pizza, and pepperoni pizza, but there’s also some you may have never had before: Muzzarella is an Argentinian fave with tons of oregano and cheese on a spongy base, for example, while Magyaros pizza from Hungary has cheese, salami, bacon, onion, and chili powder. A Teriyaki Mayonnaise slice hailing from Japan has cheese, teriyaki chicken, seaweed, and mayo, and a Tom Yum from Thailand has cheese, shrimp, mushrooms, chili pepper, and lime leaves.
And these are only a few examples from the Doodle. The more levels you beat, the more types of pizza you can learn about. You may be wondering why Google is celebrating pizza today, December 6, of all days? To that I say, we should be celebrating pizza every day! But actually there is a reason.
On this day back in 2007, the culinary art of Neapolitan "Pizzaiulo" was added to the list of UNESCO's practices that lend to the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Which basically means what we already know—that pizza is a part of human culture. According to a blog post posted by Google, five billion pizzas are consumed every year.
So today, perhaps more than any other day, you should definitely get yourself a slice of pizza—and maybe opt for these fascinating, delicious combinations of toppings.
