Why is thrifting so popular?

BIG FLATS, N.Y. (WETM) – Thrifting or shopping at thrift stores is something that has been popular for years. With a down economy it’s become even more popular.

“I think it’s good because it gives new life to things that would’ve otherwise been thrown away.”

Plato’s Closet in Big Flats is one of a few thrift stores in the Southern Tier. Jessica Clark grew up here and says she opened the store to provide an alternative to the Arnot Mall for shopping.

“I remember when we opened this store almost ten years ago and right after we opened it, the Arnot Mall was like dubbed as the wasteland of retail right? So, for me it’s really specific and dear to my heart because of growing up in this community and bringing this concept here,” said Store Owner Jessica Clark.

She says there’s a few factors that are contributing to the thrifting boom.

“Well, I could go ahead and say the economy right away, but I honestly think that it has been very fashion driven. from celebrities and to influencers I’d like to say. I think social media has been a big drive for thrifting.”

It’s also about giving back to the environment and community.

“It’s important in my eyes to just. To just give back and give things new life rather than throwing it away or just using it for other things. You can give it to people. You can give it to charities. Just to help other people in need that maybe couldn’t buy those items new for themselves. it’s a very good sustainable option,” said thrifter Caroline Proctor.

“There’s landfills everywhere. That’s just wasted clothing and meanwhile, there’s people that need clothing. Right? So, for us thrifting is really cool and what we do here is because we’re really community based,” said Clark.

Other thrift stores in the Southern Tier include: Arnot Ogden Medical Center Thrift in Elmira, Southport Thrift Shop in Southport, Bargain Hut in Elmira, Four Sisters Treasures in Horseheads, and Red Door Thrift Store in Waverly.
