Why the Messy Winter Bun is a Cold Weather Savior

As someone with dry skin, sensitive eyes, static-prone hair, and a legitimate fear of slipping on ice, I consider getting to work in one piece a triumph on sub-30-degree days. Needless to say, my beauty routine goes the ultra minimal route with showers at night, mascara on top lashes only (try this tip if your eyes water like mine), and my long hair twisted into a knot at the back of my head.

Unlike Alex with her choppy mid-length strands, I can’t do turtleneck hair. I’ve tried tucking it into my sweater and wrapping it in a scarf, but my straight hair tangles and gets ultra staticky. Instead, I’ve resorted to my middle school go-to, twisting my hair into messy loops. This is not a post-gym, get-the-hair-off-my-neck topknot. To achieve this look, hair should be centered directly at the back of the head so it can sit just above your turtleneck or scarf. To prevent static and add shine and freshness to a two or three-day old shampoo, I spritz with Oribe Côte d'Azur Hair Refresher ($25) and use a comb to rake the sides of hair straight back, leaving it loose on top. Twist hair into a knot and secure with Conair Brush Styling Essentials Bobby Pins ($2) or a non-damaging elastic in a shade that matches your hair like Emi Jay Brown Ombre 5-Pack ($11). Pull out a few strands for a casual effect, and spray on a quick coat of Pantene Pro-V Style Series Air Spray Alcohol Free in Hairspray Brushable Flexible Hold ($6) to lock your style in place. And remember: don’t overthink it. This is one of those styles that’s better when it looks (and is) truly effortless.
