Why Sofia Richie Skipped the 2023 Met Gala

Sofia Richie's wedding to Elliot Grainge at the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in the south of France took the internet by storm last weekend. The daughter of superstar Lionel Richie, Sofia wore three bespoke Chanel gowns during her nuptials. As tonight's Met Gala is themed around Karl Lagerfeld—who famously worked for Chanel for many years—many hoped Richie would be in attendance in Chanel.

"Working with Chanel was not only an honor but a true dream of mine," she said. "Having the opportunity to create this dress and work so closely with Madame Olivia Douchez, première of haute couture salons, and observing their art and immaculate attention to detail was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience."

Despite her current link to Chanel, Sofia Richie (now Sofia Richie Grainge) will be skipping the 2023 Met Gala, as she's currently in the Maldives on her honeymoon. The newlyweds are staying at One&Only Reethi Rah in North Maté Atoll in the Maldives. As the fastest flight from New York to the Maldives takes nearly 19 hours, and Richie posted an Instagram from the Maldives this morning... she definitely won't be appearing at the Met this evening.

Richie, 24, has attended three Met Galas before. In 2017, she wore Topshop to the Rei Kawakubo-themed Met Gala:

In 2016, she was again in Topshop to the "Manus x Machina" gala. "This time is different," she said that year. "Last time, I went with Stella McCartney, and I didn’t know what to expect. I’m obsessed with fashion and always have been, so that’s what I look forward to — seeing what everyone is going to wear."

And in 2015, Richie made her Met Gala debut in Stella McCartney at the "China: Through The Looking Glass" themed-gala.

Though we will not be seeing Richie and her new husband this year, hopefully they will appear next year.
