Selena Gomez has been in New York City for the past few months, shooting her upcoming Hulu comedy Only Murders in the Building. But that’s not the primary reason she isn’t at tonight’s Grammys ceremony in Los Angeles, where both performers and nominees are welcome to attend in-person if adhering to COVID-19 safety precautions. Gomez wasn’t nominated for any awards this year, and her omission was a snub. Gomez released Rare last January, one of her most critically acclaimed albums, but it received no nominations.

Gomez isn’t performing either, giving her absolutely no reason to be part of tonight’s show.

The Recording Academy’s snub of Rare deeply affected her—and has made her question her longterm future in music. In her new interview with Vogue released this week, Gomez spoke about how she may give up singing and stick to acting.

“It’s hard to keep doing music when people don’t necessarily take you seriously,” Gomez said. “I’ve had moments where I’ve been like, ‘What’s the point? Why do I keep doing this?’ ‘Lose You to Love Me’ I felt was the best song I’ve ever released, and for some people it still wasn’t enough. I think there are a lot of people who enjoy my music, and for that I’m so thankful, for that I keep going, but I think the next time I do an album it’ll be different. I want to give it one last try before I maybe retire music.”

When Vogue’s reporter asked for clarification on the retiring comment, Gomez winced, saying, “I need to be careful.” She added that she wants to spend more time producing and to “give myself a real shot at acting.”
