Hours after rumors spread that Selena Gomez could make a surprise appearance at the American Music Awards, Gomez set the record straight by not attending. Gomez is not nominated for any awards tonight, making her absence understandable, even though the teaser for her new music video for her, Cardi B, Ozuna and DJ Snake's single "Taki Taki" aired during the show.

Fans were convinced earlier that Gomez might attend because Taylor Swift, the show's opener, had a plus one, according to photos of the show's seating. The thought was that Swift might bring her close friend Gomez instead of her boyfriend Joe Alwyn, or anyone else. And Swift did bring a close friend...but not Gomez. Instead, Claire Kislinger was with her as her date. Camila Cabello was on the opposite side of her.

The AMAs are still a special event for Gomez. Two years ago, after she took time off to focus on her health, she made her return to public life there, making a moving speech to the crowd. "I had to stop," Gomez said then of why she went to treatment. "Because I had everything, and I was absolutely broken inside. And I kept it all together enough to where I would never let you down, but I kept it too much together to where I let myself down."

Last year, Gomez performed at the AMAs, going platinum for the occasion.
