Here’s Why Season 3 of 'Warrior' Might Not Happen

From Men's Health

Warrior, the action-drama series inspired by Bruce Lee, made waves when it first premiered on Cinemax in 2019. The series was originally pitched by Bruce Lee himself, but he was shot down by multiple studios who thought American viewers weren’t ready for a Chinese lead on primetime TV.

The idea was later brought to life by his daughter, Shannon Lee, alongside fellow executive producers Justin Lin and Jonathan Trooper. Warrior focuses on a Chinese immigrant, Ah Sahm, after he arrives in San Francisco in 1875. As a martial artist, he finds himself in Chinatown’s Tong Wars as anti-Chinese sentiment grows in the city.

The series has been one of Cinemax’s biggest hits, but was the success of the first two seasons enough to bring a Season 3?

Will there be a Warrior Season 3?

It’s not likely. Warrior was cancelled after Cinemax announced in 2020 that it would end all of its scripted programming as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the series was recently picked up by HBO Max in January, where the first two seasons can be streamed. Its creators are now pushing for HBO Max to pick up where the series left off.

“The producers planned the show for four to five seasons,” Warrior star Chen Tang told Inverse. “We still have so much story to tell. Though we aren’t in production, it doesn’t mean it can’t happen. I genuinely believe that Warrior will fight on another day.”

Executive producer Justin Lin took to social media with a plea for fans to spread the word, hoping it might persuade HBO Max to renew the series before the show’s momentum is lost. HBO Max has yet to comment on the show.

Season 2 of Warrior premiered 18 months after Season 1. So, if the show does get picked up for another season, it’s likely fans won’t see it until at least April 2022.

What would Season 3 of Warrior be about?

Fans might be extra hopeful for a Season 3 of Warrior because of the epic cliffhanger after the season finale, leaving several possibilities for what would come next. During the finale’s post-credits, Zing broke out of jail and is likely headed on a quest for revenge. Season 3 could also see more tension between Young Jun and Ah Sahm. We already know that Young Jun wasn’t a fan of Ah Sahm being worshipped by Chinatown after the Tong alliance turned down the Irish.

Although it's nice to think of what's to come, and we know producers of Warrior planned for a Season 3, you probably shouldn't hold your breath on this one just yet.
