Rihanna has skipped the 2019 Met Gala, in one of the night's more disappointing absences. The singer was on her Instagram Story earlier today, where she shared a Bible verse. Whether RiRi was in New York City or far away isn't clear, but the singer was last seen out in Barbados on April 28.

Rihanna has long been considered Queen of the Met Gala. She literally dressed like the Pope last year at the Met Gala she co-chaired. Had she gone tonight, the Met Gala would've been Rihanna's most formal red carpet of 2019 so far. Rihanna has not been to any award shows yet this year, but she has done several Fenty Beauty events around the world.

Rihanna's history of doing the Met Gala theme best is long-running. Last year for the ball's Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination theme, she wore Maison Margiela to create her show-stopping Pope look:

In 2017, she wore a tiered Comme des Garçons gown to the Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art Of The In-Between themed gala. She accessorized with confidence:

In 2015, she came in one of the Gala's longest trains ever. It was the yellow train that sparked so many memes-and really adhered to the night's China: Through The Looking Glass theme:

At the 2014 gala, she put a fairy-tale twist on a long-sleeve crop top for the gala's Charles James: Beyond Fashion theme:

In 2012, she wore a ladylike black snakeskin dress for the gala's Schiaparelli And Prada: Impossible Conversations theme:

In 2011, Rihanna came out in a lace, nearly sideless dress for the night's Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty theme:

The singer's first two Met Galas featured her wearing a black tux in 2009 (for The Model As Muse theme) and a white ethereal dress in 2007 with edgy black lace gloves (for the Poiret: King Of Fashion theme):
