Brooks Marks has seen the highs and lows of being on reality TV firsthand over the past several years.

Marks, who hosts a new show for In The Know called Growing Up Reality With Brooks Marks, initially garnered support for his appearances on The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City alongside his mother, Meredith Marks. When he got perhaps a little too involved in the drama with his mom’s co-star Jen Shah, the tide turned, and he felt the heat from certain corners of social media. Through conversations he is having with fellow offspring of reality TV stars on Growing Up Reality and his headline-making TikTok account, the 23-year-old designer for his eponymous clothing line Brooks Marks has been opening up about the effects of that hate.

For the latest episode of In The Know’s pop culture interview series We Should Talk, Marks discussed his new hosting gig and relating to other kids of reality stars, what it was like being thrust into the spotlight when his mom joined RHOSLC, using his newfound platform to grow his eponymous clothing brand and more.

On using his TikTok to address controversies: Sometimes I run [a post] by someone because I don’t want to cause problems for my mom. For instance, if I post something that’s misinterpreted, people will come at her for it, and that’s the last thing I want to do. The whole point of why I’ve been using TikTok in that way is just that I think people on that platform get it. […] On TikTok, everyone is chill and they think it’s funny. Things are not that deep! Don’t believe everything that you see on the internet. People will say anything to paint the narrative the way that they want it. It’s just absurd, and I’m honestly so tired of being the bigger person in situations where middle-aged people are attacking me online. I just sit there and don’t comment on it, and it’s draining to do that all the time. People seem to forget that I’m currently a 23-year-old just going about my life. I’m not out to get anyone or offend people.

On his new show, Growing Up Reality With Brooks Marks: I don’t know that I would say it was outside of my comfort zone, but it was very different from anything I’ve ever done before. I think that doing something different is really exciting and fun. Everyone who watches will be able to see that, for sure.

On his experience on The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City: There’s a song by Nicki Minaj that’s like, “One minute they hate me, then they love me.” That just hits! It’s true: One minute everyone loves you, one minute everyone hates you. It’s like, pick a side. […] When I first appeared on the show, the first time I ever filmed anything with my mom was when I was 19. Don’t get me wrong: There’s been amazing support. So, so, so much support. My brand has done so well from this show. I receive so many positive DMs and comments all the time. But there are also negative comments.

On relating to fellow Housewife offspring Gia Giudice: Everything was incredible in terms of support from the show, but the second I was in a situation with a castmate of my mom’s, that was when things got tricky. I don’t have the same platform that someone who is a Housewife does, so I hadn’t known anyone else who had been in a situation like that. I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t know if I should talk about it or sit back and do my own thing and not address it. But I feel like Gia [Giudice] has been in a similar situation before, so it was nice to get to talk to her.
