Why Queen Elizabeth II Only Eats Burgers Without the Bun

Queen Elizabeth II has been a public figure for 94 years—and yet we are still learning new things about the monarch. Today’s tea: random dietary habits.

The queen’s former chef, Darren McGrady, recently gave insight into the queen’s favorite foods and the items she totally avoids. “Eleven years at the palace and we never served pizza at all, not even at receptions,” he told Insider

McGrady also told Us Weekly, “In the years that I cooked at [Buckingham] Palace, the queen never had pizza. I didn’t start cooking pizza until I moved across to Kensington Palace.” That move over to Kensington Palace was when he started working for Princess Diana and cooking for her, Prince William, and Prince Harry

Also a no-no? Any sort of fast food, which, honestly, can you even imagine Queen Elizabeth eating anything remotely Big Mac adjacent? McGrady says if she ever wanted something from takeout, the staff would make its own version. Turns out the queen does enjoy a burger, but without the bun. “Her Majesty’s Victorian upbringing dictates that the only thing you would pick up and eat with your fingers is afternoon tea,” McGrady said to Insider.

He continued, “It always tickled me at Balmoral, we would make our own burgers. They [the royal family] would shoot deer, and we would do venison burgers. There’d be gorgeous cranberry and everything stuffed into them, but we never set buns out. They would have burgers, but not the buns. So they would eat it with their knife and fork.”

Honestly, that checks out—but now we need to know what condiments QEII puts on those bunless burgers. Ketchup? Mustard? Mayo? All of the above? Also: How about fries? Does the queen also eat those with a knife and fork? I have so many more questions (and now I’m hungry).
