Why Are the Pure Beech Jersey-Knit Sheets So Irresistibly Soft?

I entered college in the dark ages (i.e., before Instagram), and so I shopped for my dorm room decor based entirely on what was within budget and grabbing reach of my mom's Bed Bath & Beyond shopping cart. The first time I picked up the Pure Beech Jersey Knit sheets, it was probably because it was the only bedding set not encased in plastic that I could feel through the packaging, and they were also a mere $40 for my Twin XL–sized, university-issued mattress (not including the obligatory BB&B coupon).

Years later, I'm still buying this same set — albeit, in a larger size and on my own dime. Why is that? How is the Pure Beech Jersey Knit Sheet set the one thing from my college years that I'm still completely brand-loyal to? Well, in the Venn diagram of bedding options on the market, they're right at the intersection of irresistibly soft and super cheap, a feat that few brands have been able to pull off. Not only that, but their stretchy and breathable 100% modal fabric requires no breaking-in at all to feel instantly at home in. And that was a big deal to freshman-year me.

But wait, what even is modal? Chances are, you've felt it before, or you're wearing it right now! It's a semi-plant-derived textile made from beech-tree pulp that's used often to make T-shirts, pajamas, and underwear. The fabric is slinky and stretchy, and it feels great against the skin. I find that modal has an unexplainable cooling feeling as well — the Pure Beech sheets tend to be my warm-weather set for precisely that reason.

The fabric feels as cozy and comforting as an old T-shirt, there's no doubt about it — but the quality is akin to one as well. After about a year of regular use, these sheets do tend to shrink and pill a bit. I haven't experienced any major deterioration with the set that I own, but it certainly doesn't feel like new. Post-sophomore year, you may want to recycle these and get yourself a new or nicer set. (A slightly more premium option with a very similar feel are the Purple bamboo sheets, which we reviewed here.) The $40 price tag for the Pure Beech sheets is a small investment for your comfort, and is probably way less than that "required" art history textbook that you'll crack open maybe once.

Those my post-grad self enjoys and appreciates the finer things at home, especially when it comes to bedding, cuddling up with this longtime favorite sheet set is a little luxury in its own way.

The Pure Beech Jersey Knit Sheet set comes with a fitted sheet, top sheet, and two pillowcases (or only one for Twin/Twin XL sizes), and is available in a wide assortment of colors.
