The good news? Prison Break might be getting a reboot. The bad news? Prison Break might be getting a reboot. According to Deadline, Hulu is in talks to resurrect the Fox drama for a "new chapter" that doesn't involve original cast members Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell.
This won't be the first comeback for the popular 2000s series, which aired its made-for-TV movie finale, Prison Break: The Final Break, shortly after its last Season 4 episode in 2009. The show returned for a shark-jumping Season 5 in 2017, featuring the return of Michael Scofield (Miller), who died at the end of the show's original run—or so viewers thought.
The reboot, which is in the very early stages of development, is written and executive produced by Mayans M.C. co-creator, executive producer and showrunner Elgin James. So, what can we expect from this latest incarnation?

When did the original Prison Break end?
What's your definition of "end?" The Season 4 finale aired on television on May 15, 2009 followed by a made-for-TV movie, Prison Break: The Final Break, on May 27, 2009. The show returned for a fifth season, also known as Prison Break: Resurrection, in 2017. That revival was a limited television event that included nine episodes, the last of which aired May 30, 2017.
How did the original Prison Break end?
Again, it depends on your definition of "end." The Season 4 finale and Prison Break: The Final Break made-for-TV movie featured Michael Scofield's death.
After he and Sara (Sarah Wayne Callies) got married, she found herself in jail for murdering Christina Scofield (Kathleen Quinlan). Michael of course hatched a plan to help her break free, but it ended with him having to sacrifice himself so that she could exit a trap door at the end of a tunnel. Sara felt horrible, but ultimately we find out that Michael would have died anyway—it turns out the brain cancer he'd been battling was terminal.
But wait! In the Season 5 revival less than 10 years later, we learn that Michael is still alive and prison breaking all over the world. The nine-episode arc follows his journey back to his family, which he completes in the final episode when he's exonerated, starts going by Michael again and reunites with Sara.
Is there going to be a new series of Prison Break?
Yes, a Prison Break reboot is reportedly coming to Hulu. It's still in the early development stages, but sources have told Deadline that it will be a new chapter and none of the original cast is slated to appear.

However, Deadline reported that the show is meant to be a reboot centered around new characters, and Purcell himself confirmed that he is not involved with the project. "...a new iteration of 'Prison Break' without myself nor Wentworth is in the early stages of production," he wrote on Instagram. "I wish them well."
He also took a moment to thank Prison Break fans and express gratitude for his experience on the original series. "I was humbled mightily by its success here and globally," he wrote. "A one off. A rare occurrence. I was very lucky, that has never been lost on me."
