When you think of Princess Diana's makeup, it's hard not to think of her signature flushed cheeks and striking blue eyeliner, which became her signature look.

The makeup artist responsible for Diana's signature look was the legendary Mary Greenwell, whose clients include everyone from Naomi Campbell to Victoria Beckham and who trained both Charlotte Tilbury and Lisa Eldridge.

And in an interview with Yahoo, Mary revealed that she was the one who convinced Diana to ditch her favorite electric blue eyeliner. "I think beiges and browns are just so much prettier. Simple as that," she said of her decision to encourage Diana to give it up for good

But despite persuading her to ditch her signature blue, Mary kept the rest of Diana's makeup pretty consistent for one particular reason.

"She was someone who was in the public eye presenting herself all the time to the public. It isn’t particularly appropriate to go on changing your look every five seconds," Mary said. "She did change her makeup a bit. It’s just that it wasn’t changed dramatically. I think dramatic change is not really something for somebody who’s in the White House or in office or in a royal family, as it’s just not really appropriate."

And even without her blue liner, Diana still loved to play up her eyes.

"She felt no need to be showy, so she kept her makeup subtle and appropriate for the occasion. She loved to exaggerate her gorgeous eyes and wear loads of mascara," Mary recalled of the late princess.
