This morning, members of the royal family are making their annual Christmas walk up to St Mary Magdalene church in Sandringham, but a few famous faces appear to be missing from the crowd.

The Sussexes are notably spending their first holiday season as a family of three with Meghan's mother Doria.

"The Duke and Duchess are looking forward to extended family time towards the end of this month," a spokesperson for the couple said last month. "Having spent the last two Christmases at Sandringham, their Royal Highnesses will spend the holidays this year, as a new family, with the Duchess' mother Doria Ragland."

The statement continued: "This decision is in line with precedent set previously by other members of the royal family, and has the support of Her Majesty the Queen."

And when Queen Elizabeth arrived at the church by car, it became clear that Prince Philip, who is 98, would also be absent from services this morning.

His absence is understandable given that he was recently hospitalized. Last week, the Duke of Edinburgh traveled to King Edward VII Hospital in London for observation and treatment for a pre-existing condition.

Per Buckingham Palace, the admission was "a precautionary measure, on the advice of His Royal Highness’ Doctor."

After spending a few days at the hospital, Prince Philip was discharged on Christmas Eve, and was able to join the royal family in Sandringham.

"His Royal Highness would like to thank everyone who sent their good wishes," reads a statement released from Buckingham Palace yesterday.
