From Town & Country

A central topic of Prince Harry and Meghan's interview with Oprah on March 7 was Harry's relationship with his family. Naturally, Oprah—along with the rest of the world—was curious to hear from Harry directly about his father and brother. While his response was guarded, it seems that Harry is still sorting that out for himself. He said that after he and Meghan had discussed stepping down as senior royal members of the family, Prince Charles stopped taking his calls. And when asked about Prince William, Harry said that the "relationship is space at the moment."

At the same time, Harry explained that he understood their situation because, "My father and my brother, they are trapped. They don't get to leave. And I have huge compassion for that." He said that, additionally, there is a constant pressure to put one's best face forward. "That's a part of the job," Harry said. "It's a part of the role. That's what's expected, no matter who you are in the family, no matter what's going on in your personal life, no matter what's just happened." And while he had hoped his father and brother would "learn from history," and not repeat with Meghan what had happened with Princess Diana, he did not feel that was the case.

However, Harry seems hopeful this will change in the future. Of his dad, he says, "There's a lot of hurt that happened. And I will continue to make it one of my priorities to try and heal that relationship." For his brother he put it more simply: "Time heals all things."
