Why Prince Harry Isn't Joining Meghan Markle and Archie in Canada Just Yet

While Meghan Markle has returned to Canada with Archie, following his summit with the Queen over the Sussexes' exit as senior members of the royal family, Prince Harry has yet to join the family.

Harry is remaining in the U.K. to attend an engagement in London on Thursday. He will be hosting the Rugby League World Cup 2021 draws for the men’s, women’s and wheelchair tournaments at Buckingham Palace.

On Monday, Harry, Prince William, Prince Charles, and Queen Elizabeth met for a summit to discuss the Sussexes' decision to step back as senior members of the royal family and divide their time between the U.K. and North America. Though it was believed that Meghan would call in, she was absent from discussions because the Sussexes decided that it wasn’t necessary for the Duchess to join," the Palace said in a statement.

Following the meeting, the Queen released a statement of support for Harry and Meghan, writing that though she would have preferred they stay with the royal family, she is "entirely supportive Harry and Meghan's desire to create a new life as a young family."

Last week, Harry and Meghan made the bombshell announcement that they would be stepping back from the royal family and work to become financially independent.

"After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution," they wrote. "We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen. It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment. We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honour our duty to The Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages."
