Why Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis Aren't at Prince Philip’s Funeral

Prince William and Kate Middleton's children Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis may have had a special relationship with their great-grandfather Prince Philip, but the three are not at his funeral ceremony this afternoon. There's a good reason why no royal children are really there: The service is limited to 30 people due to the coronavirus pandemic, and the Cambridge kids are really young.

George is seven, while his sister Charlotte is five, and Louis is just two. Considering the formality of the service, it being televised, and its overall somberness, it's hardly surprising that the royal family opted to let Kate and William's children mourn the late Duke in private.

A source spoke to Us Weekly ahead of the funeral about how the Cambridge kids were coping. William told George, Charlotte and Louis that Prince Philip has ‘gone to heaven’ and ‘is an angel now,'” a royal insider told the outlet. “They’re still so young so he and Kate wanted to let them down gently.”

Kate and William did share a rare look into their children's relationship with Philip this week. The couple shared multiple new photos of George, Louis, and Charlotte with Philip on their Instagram over the last couple days.

William also wrote about Philip's relationship with George, Charlotte, and Louis in a personal statement he shared on the Kensington Palace Instagram in honor of Philip.

The Duke of Cambridge wrote:

My grandfather’s century of life was defined by service – to his country and Commonwealth, to his wife and Queen, and to our family.

I feel lucky to have not just had his example to guide me, but his enduring presence well into my own adult life – both through good times and the hardest days. I will always be grateful that my wife had so many years to get to know my grandfather and for the kindness he showed her. I will never take for granted the special memories my children will always have of their great-grandpa coming to collect them in his carriage and seeing for themselves his infectious sense of adventure as well as his mischievous sense of humour!

My grandfather was an extraordinary man and part of an extraordinary generation. Catherine and I will continue to do what he would have wanted and will support The Queen in the years ahead. I will miss my Grandpa, but I know he would want us to get on with the job.
