Why This Pregnant Woman Walked Out of a Subway Restaurant in Tears

When you’re pregnant, making special requests at a restaurant to make sure you’re avoiding certain health risks is just par for the course. That’s exactly what an expectant mom named Kassidy Small was attempting to do when she ordered a sandwich at a local Subway restaurant.

“I walked up to the counter and asked for a footlong ham,” Small wrote on Facebook. “I also politely asked that he microwave the meat before toasting the sandwich. Simple request, right? The guy threw a fit.”

The employee told her he could just toast it for her, which meant she had to explain again that she’s pregnant and needed it microwaved first. Small was simply trying to follow CDC guidelines, which recommend that pregnant women only eat deli meat if it’s heated to an internal temperature of 165 degrees F to steer clear of bacteria (like listeria) that could cause harm to the baby.

“He completely ignored my request, made my sandwich, added cheese (which he didn’t even ask if I wanted), and threw it in the toaster,” Small explained. “He said that there are 20 people in line and he has already made 90 sandwiches today. He then said ‘THIS IS FAST FOOD, NOT FINE DINING!’ He also attempted to prove that the meat was hot enough by pulling out a thermometer. He was completely out of line, rude, and belittling my request that was in the best interest for my unborn baby.”

Small and another woman who had watched the whole thing go down ended up leaving the restaurant without food. “I was in tears and that’s embarrassing in public,” Small told FOX6Now. “It’s easy for a pregnant woman to cry but I was also upset because of what just happened.”

Thankfully, Small took action following the incident, sharing in a comment on her original Facebook post, “I did file a complaint on the Subway website. It says they will forward it to the store owner. Hopefully she get’s [sic] the message and has a 'serious’ talk with that employee. I can’t imagine treating someone the way he treated me.”
